How To

How to become a coach for life

One of the most frequently asked questions online is how to become a life coach. There are many options for becoming a life-coach, but there are some steps you must take before you become a professional life coach.

  1. Decide what you want to do. Before you can start any career, it is important to know what your passions and interests are. Getting into coaching is very easy if you don't know what you want to do yet. Before looking at many options, reflect on what drives you to this career. If you're thinking "I want to help people", then find out how you can become a life coach.
  2. Set goals and create a plan. Once you know what you want to pursue, make a plan. You can start to read about the profession. Make a list of everything that you learn and save it so you can find them again when you need. Without a clear goal or vision, don't rush to do things. Set realistic goals that you can achieve during the next few years.
  3. Be patient. To become a life coach, you need to have patience and be dedicated. The first year of training is usually the hardest. You might spend between 2-4 hours per week with clients after your initial training period. This means you may have to work on weekends and long days. If you are passionate about what you do, you won’t feel tired even if it takes you 14 hours per week.
  4. Get certified. To become a licensed life coach, you will need certification from a recognized organization such as NLP Certification Institute (NLCI). You will be able to gain credibility with potential employers and open up new possibilities.
  5. Network. It is important to establish relationships with other coaches and experts. Ask for help and share your knowledge. You will have the experience to offer support to coaches just starting their journey.
  6. Continue learning. Never stop learning. Read books, articles and blogs about the field. Learn more about psychology, communication, and human behavior.
  7. Positive thinking is key. Negative attitude is the number one mistake made by new coaches. Always remember that a successful life coach has a positive attitude. Your words, actions, and attitude will reflect on clients. Smile and keep your eyes open for opportunities to be positive.
  8. Practice patience. As I mentioned earlier, the first one year of life coaching is often the hardest. Take breaks now and then and remind yourself why you decided to become a life coach in the first place.
  9. Enjoy the process. You may feel like you are on a never-ending journey, but the rewards will outweigh all the difficulties. You will meet wonderful people and learn a lot about yourself along the way.
  10. Have fun. Finally, enjoy the ride. Most importantly, have fun.
